Dead Kitchen Space
[본문]
We have this “nook” area in our kitchen that we have used for years as a kids play area with mats down. Our kids have outgrown the play area, so here we are asking ourselves what to do with this area.
- First pic is the nook.
- Second pic is showing the nook relative to the rest of the kitchen (play kitchen switched out for basketball bin)
- third pic is taken standing in nook looking across to butler’s pantry area.
Relevant info:
- area is 6ft wide and 5ft deep
- we have a separate dining space we use for all meals so we don’t have to have a table area. That said, some kind of table area is an option as an art/homework table to work at or for snacks; kids are still under 5 so a table still needs to be usable for them
- we are not looking to remodel and open up whole space as a bigger kitchen (at least not yet!)
- some storage would be nice for traditional mudroom things (think shoes, bags, coats) since we don’t have that near the primary door we enter the house but this is close by
Soooo what would you do with this area?
Dead Kitchen Space
That first photo had me thinking you were just roasting your kid’s kitchen setup lol
Same! I was thinking they just needed a rug to pull it all together!
I think a booth would work perfectly there!
Yes! Please do an eat in nook. Perfect spot. You even have the pass through slot in the wall! That’s how my grandma used to deliver toast to us in the den.
I do like the sound of that!
This is my favorite! The benches could be used as storage too
This is my dream! I’ve always wanted a space that a dinning nook made sense!
If you need a mudroom and this is situated in the right spot, go for it! Some cubbies to store things in and sit on, hooks, a washable rug, etc
It’s a breakfast nook for a three sided banquet and oval table.
Whoever designed this kitchen deserves a pebble in their shoe. You have to walk to the sun to use the microwave?!
Microwaves probably didn't exist when the house was built
Good point
I'd just put a pretty round table in there with some chairs, no need to cram furniture in to fill the entire nook. It's always good to have some kind of seating in the kitchen to take breaks, have a cup of tea, or just keep the person cooking company.
This. A nice table with a couple comfy armchairs. You will be surprised how often you use it. We have eat in kitchen right next to the dining room, but the kitchen has a counter for eating at, so we just put a couple of chairs and a rug and table in the kitchen and use it all the time. How many separate spaces do you really need for dining anyway?
From your butler’s pantry cabinetry, I can see this is an old house. That area was meant to be a banquette seating breakfast nook. They were really popular in the 1910s and 20s. You restore that but if it isn’t useful to you, there’s no reason you can’t make this a mudroom area with storage and hooks for jackets and bags. There are lots of pre-made mudroom cabinets with shoe storage. You could add bench seating with storage where the play kitchen is now so people can sit and put on shoes, or as a place to rest a backpack or sports bag while it’s being packed or unpacked. As a mom of now-grown kids, I can say having a space to contain all that is so very nice and will serve you from the preschool through high school years. Having designated space for coats, bags, and shoes is wonderful. It really keeps mess contained and helps with the early morning rush.
All correct assumptions; house was built in 1927 (Centennial party incoming!). Helpful, thank you!

I wanted to throw together some quick ideas of what might work here and give you some visuals of how they might look. I broke it down into three ideas based on what you described. A mudroom / drop zone, a dining nook for kids, and a homework zone. I used Ikea furniture as examples because it’s easy to look them up online and find the dimensions to shop for similarly sized items. And for things like the homework zone which may not be a permanent set-up Ikea is pretty affordable.
Personally I like the mudroom or kid homework zone options best as I think the dining nook may be a bit cramped and if you already have a dining area you like using it seems like it'd be better to get a different function from this space.
For the homework area I put in two separate desks with a drawer divider as opposed to one long desk because I know how tough it can be to have two kids with different energy levels working on the same space. This may help create a little more personal space for each kid.

Kid's Homework Zone
Dining Nook
Something of the sort
It looks like a pretty good sized space, I wonder if you could do a mudroom wall on one side (bench w shoe storage under, hooks or subbies above for jackets/backpacks), and then a bar height counter on the side with the kitchen window with a couple seats, kids could do homework while you make dinner?
I would put a shelf for plants under the window, a large hall tree on the left side with the tall wall, one with the storage underneath and hooks on top for rain jackets etc and a little sitting edge for getting shoes on, and on the right side I would put a small rectangular table against the wall with a bench. It could also be super cute with a reading nook bench with the book storage and a cushion on top in front of the window instead
Something like this
i've been there with the shifting kid zones. a banquette or bench with storage underneath on one wall could be perfect. then a small, sturdy table (ikea has great adjustable ones) and some cute wall hooks above the bench for bags and coats. that gives you the homework/snack spot and the mudroom storage all tucked into one defined area. a washable rug underneath makes clean-up easy too.
Storage. Base cabinets to match the original pantry cabinets. Open shelves above. Can never have too much storage.
Since you said you dont need a table for eating, why not add pretty shelves and house plants in the left wall and a short stand under the window for more plants or maybe books? A cute round rug in the middle and a small cool looking chair (or bean bag Since you have kids)
Since you already have an eating area, I think a homework /reading nook might work. A small desk and bookshelf (maybe a mix of kids books and cook books?) and a big cozy easy chair or small loveseat for cuddling up with kiddos and reading together.
A plant stand would look really nice there.
